Job Description

The Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC) as the central scientific institution and center for data-intensive computing at KIT, is in charge of the conceptual design, development, and automated operation of a federated and Germany-wide distributed computing infrastructure within the PUNCH4NFDI project.

As part of PUNCH4NFDI, you will research, develop, and operate new efficiency-enhancing computing and storage technologies as part of a dedicated team. Complementing the federated computing infrastructure, you will also deploy distributed and coordinated data caches, as well as implement “data-locality aware scheduling” to ensure efficient access to external data.

Your further responsibilities include, among others, the deployment and testing of a federated and distributed multi-petabyte storage solution (Data lake), which is being developed by external partners as part of another sub-project. As well as representing the SCC in the relevant working groups of the PUNCH4NFDI project.

You will publish your work results in renowned journals and present them at national and international conferences.

There is the possibility of a part-time doctorate.

Personal qualification:

  • A completed scientific university degree (Diplom (Uni)/Master) in computer science, physics or a comparable field of study
  • Very good knowledge of at least one object-oriented programming language, ideally Python
  • Very good knowledge of tools and techniques for collaborative software development, especially the version control system git, continuous integration & deployment, and test-driven development
  • Strong experience in operation and administration of IT services under Linux, ideally with a configuration management system (e.g. puppet)
  • Ideally basic knowledge in asynchronous programming and knowledge in distributed computing
  • Very good knowledge of the English language, both written and spoken

In addition to the aforementioned skills, we consider initiative, the ability to work in a team and creativity, as well as conceptual and strategic thinking to be very important.

EG 13, provided that the professional and personal requirements are met.
