We are seeking a Sr. Advanced Physicist in our newly created role for our Broomfield, CO location who will focus on research in quantum error correction in fully connected trapped-ion systems. A fully connected device is not beholden to the hardware geometry but can support error correction codes that are defined in arbitrary geometries, and we need your help in understanding how to best take advantage of this exotic system. A large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer is still years away, but we are already laying the groundwork to integrate the technology into our systems. In this position, you will help define hardware and software requirements for both near-term and long-term goals. We seek to identify codes that can operate below the error pseudo-threshold in the trapped-ion architecture, demonstrate the ability in experiments, and understand how to integrate the codes into next generation machines. This position will involve working with other theorists and experimentalists to understand the noise environment, understand the impact of particular noise structures on different codes through analytic and numerical work, work with our software team to develop new programming tools for controlling logical qubits in the machines, designing and executing near-term experimental demonstrations, communicating results to the community through high-impact journal publications and conference presentations, investigating near-term uses quantum error correction techniques, and studying the full-integration of codes into large-scale machines. Key responsibilities:

  • Work with theory, software, and experimental teams to design and carry out quantum error correction technology demonstrations on existing quantum computers
  • Present findings to our larger team and outside community through technical presentations and journal publications
  • Work with AMO physics and architecture teams to find codes and hardware designs that work well together

YOU MUST HAVE:

  • PhD
  • Publication record in quantum error correction research
  • 1+ year of programming skills (Python preferred)
  • Applicants for employment for this position must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States and with Quantinuum. (i.e., H1-B visa, F-1 visa (OPT), TN visa or any other non-immigrant status)

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Not-Incentive Eligible
  • Salary Range: $106,000 to $134,000
